Joker Triumphant (Triumphant, for the Joker)

Figure 4.3 shows a short rhythmic figure that occurs throughout the film whenever the Joker strikes or is winning the upper hand. Like a sonic slap in the face, two sixteenth notes hit on a downbeat and two further sixteenth notes follow on the second eighth note of beat 2, adding to the short hacking attacks an anticipatory sense of syncopation.19 The motif is not dissimilar to a rock riff, comprising a bass note on D with synthesizers and distorted guitars stacked on top. Heavily compressed and gated, these have a percussive and visceral attack. Each time Triumphant occurs, its distorted timbre sounds aggressive, which is further amplified by the sudden surge in relative volume of music against other soundtrack elements. After it has initially been introduced during the bank robbery, as the Joker’s goons make their way downstairs into the bank vault, the motif is subsequently timed to shock and awe. With its rhythmic precision, the motif sounds assured and calculated but at the same time it sounds ramshackle and rebellious in its timbre and texture, in keeping with the aforementioned punk aesthetic. By its sound and placement in the film, it is a highly effective signifier of the Joker’s triumph, however temporary, into the shortest of musical gestures.
